On a summer evening in Detroit, on June 14, 2016, a 34-year-old Black man named Demetris Shepard, affectionately known to friends and family as 'Fuji,' was standing outside a residence on the city's east side. His life was abruptly cut short when an occupant of a passing gray Jeep Commander opened fire, striking him. The vehicle then sped away from the 3000 block of Bewick Street, leaving a scene of sudden violence and a community in shock.
