On the early morning of June 9, 2019, a violent incident occurred in the Greektown entertainment district of Detroit, Michigan, claiming the life of 48-year-old Black male Bernard Howard. The shooting took place at approximately 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Congress and Beaubien streets, shortly after local bars had closed for the night. The area was crowded with people leaving nearby establishments when gunfire erupted, creating a chaotic scene in the heart of downtown Detroit.
According to reports from the scene, an off-duty firefighter from Hamtramck was in the vicinity celebrating a bachelor party when the shooting occurred. He witnessed the aftermath and rushed to aid the victim, finding Howard suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the firefighter's immediate efforts to perform CPR and the subsequent arrival of emergency medical personnel, Howard succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Two other individuals, a 34-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, were also struck by gunfire during the incident and were transported to a hospital in serious condition.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Detroit police investigators focused their attention on a parking lot near the Legends Gentlemen’s Club and Sweetwater Tavern. Authorities initially detained a person of interest in connection with the homicide; however, police later announced that no arrests had been formally made, and the individual was released. As of the available public records following the incident, the shooter remained at large, and no further details regarding a permanent arrest, charges, or a conviction for Howard's murder have been released.
