On a tragic Saturday morning in August 2022, the life of 41-year-old Morriss Campbell Jr. was cut short in a burst of violence on Saratoga Street in Detroit. The incident, which unfolded at what authorities described as a known vacant drug house, left two other men dead and two women wounded, forever altering the lives of all involved.
The chaos began when a man, later identified as Jony Saad Alatto, entered the residence with the intent to steal crack cocaine.
In the ensuing moments, Alatto opened fire, unleashing a hail of bullets that would claim the lives of Campbell, who was found deceased at the scene, as well as 55-year-old Alphonso Henry and 76-year-old John Coffie Jr., who succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital. Two women also suffered from gunshot wounds but survived the horrific ordeal. The ages of the victims that day spanned from 35 to 76 years old.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Detroit Police Department launched an investigation that eventually led to the apprehension of Alatto. Although he was initially charged with nearly two dozen crimes, a plea deal was reached. Alatto pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Campbell, Henry, and Coffie Jr. In a courtroom filled with the raw emotion of surviving victims and the loved ones of those slain, Jony Saad Alatto was sentenced to a term of 30 to 60 years in prison. During his sentencing, Alatto offered an apology, stating that he had let drugs control his life.
