On a late Monday evening, March 29, 1982, a dedicated officer's life was tragically cut short in the line of duty. William Green, a 29-year-old male officer with the Detroit Police Department, was fatally shot at approximately 11:05 p.m. near the corner of Woodward and Leicester, in front of the Ambassador Convalescent Center. With nine years of service on the force, he was a seasoned officer who had committed his career to protecting the citizens of Detroit.
That night, Officer Green and his partner were working in plainclothes when they observed a group of teenagers they suspected were involved in drug activity. As the two officers approached the group to investigate, one of the young individuals unexpectedly pulled out a firearm. In a sudden act of violence, the youth fired the weapon, striking Officer Green in the head. The grievous injury proved to be fatal, and a life of public service was brought to an abrupt and violent end.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an investigation was launched to bring the person responsible to justice. The suspect, one of the teenagers from the group, was apprehended and subsequently faced legal proceedings for the death of Officer Green. The individual was ultimately convicted of manslaughter in connection with the fatal shooting. Officer William Green was survived by his two children, his mother, and his sisters.
