In the early hours of May 21, 2020, a tragedy unfolded in a home on Birwood Street in Detroit, Michigan, forever altering the lives of a family. Four-year-old Nathanial Mesiah Roby-Townsend, a young Black boy described as jolly and full of life, was awake for a late-night snack. As he walked toward the back of the house where other children were, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of the night.
Two unknown individuals, armed with rifles, had opened fire on the residence from outside.
A single bullet struck Nathanial in the chest, and he died instantly. His grandmother later recounted the horrifying moments, expressing that they had thought he had safely made it to the back of the house with the other children, but he never did. The sudden and senseless act of violence left his family devastated. His mother, Marlisha Roby, remembered her son as a joyful child who loved to dance and was just beginning to experience life. She lamented that he was too young to have his life cut so short and that he didn't get a chance to live it.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Detroit Police Department and the FBI launched an investigation. A possible vehicle of interest was identified as a white GMC minivan. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of those responsible for Nathanial's death. Despite the ongoing investigation and pleas from his family for justice, the case remains unsolved. No arrests have been made, and no specific suspects have been publicly identified. The community and law enforcement continue to seek answers in the hope of bringing closure to a family still mourning the profound loss of a little boy whose life was tragically taken.
