In the early hours of May 21, 2020, a tragedy unfolded in a home on Birwood Street in Detroit, Michigan, forever altering the lives of a family. Four-year-old Nathanial Mesiah Roby-Townsend, a young Black boy described as jolly and full of life, was awake for a late-night snack. As he walked toward the back of the house where other children were, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of the night. Two unknown individuals, armed with rifles, had opened fire on the residence from outside.
