In the early morning hours of October 16, 2012, Jawan McQueen, a 47-year-old African-American male, was working his shift as a cab driver in Detroit, Michigan. At approximately 4:20 a.m., he was parked at a Mobil gas station on the corner of Harper Avenue and Conner Street on the city's east side when he was ambushed by two individuals. The assailants approached his vehicle and opened fire in what police believe was an attempted robbery.
McQueen, who was inside his cab at the time of the
attack, managed to return fire at his attackers. Investigators believe he may have wounded at least one of the suspects, as a trail of blood was found at the scene. Despite his efforts to defend himself, McQueen sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died at the scene. The two suspects fled and have not been identified.
The death of Jawan McQueen was part of a string of violent crimes against cab drivers in Detroit during that period, heightening fears within the community of drivers. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the capture of the individuals responsible for McQueen's death. However, to date, no arrests have been made in the case, and the investigation into the murder of Jawan McQueen remains ongoing.
