On the evening of April 11, 2022, a violent encounter in Detroit led to the tragic death of 25-year-old Jason Cowins, a male resident of the city. At approximately 8:41 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the night, and police were dispatched to a fire station located in the 6320 block of West Chicago Street following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered medics already on the scene, rendering urgent medical aid to Cowins, who was suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was swiftly transported to a local hospital for further treatment, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Cowins was in a vehicle with a 47-year-old male passenger at the time of the incident.
The investigation into the fatal shooting, conducted by the Detroit Police Department, quickly led to a suspect. The following day, on April 12, 2022, authorities arrested 29-year-old James Andrew Brown, also of Detroit, in connection with the homicide. It is alleged that Brown used two handguns to fire into the vehicle occupied by Cowins and the other man, which resulted in Cowins' fatal injuries.
Following his arrest, James Andrew Brown was charged with a string of serious offenses, including one count of first-degree murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, in addition to three counts of felony firearm. He was arraigned in 36th District Court and was remanded to jail. A probable cause conference was scheduled for April 21, 2022.
