In 1982, a young college student named Walter Forbes found his life irrevocably altered by a series of events that began with him breaking up a bar fight in his home state of Michigan. The day after the fight, one of the men involved, Dennis Hall, retaliated by shooting Forbes. Shortly after, on July 12, 1982, Hall was found dead in a fire that was determined to be arson.
Suspicion quickly fell upon Forbes due to the recent altercation.
Forbes was subsequently arrested and, in May 1983, convicted of arson and murder. The conviction was largely based on the testimony of a key witness, Annice Kennebrew, who claimed she saw Forbes and two other men set the fire. Despite significant inconsistencies in her testimony, which led to the other two accused men being cleared, Forbes was sentenced to life in prison.
For nearly four decades, Walter Forbes maintained his innocence from behind bars. The turning point in his case came years later when evidence emerged suggesting the fire was part of an insurance fraud scheme orchestrated by the building's owner. This, coupled with the persistent efforts of Forbes and his legal team, led to a re-examination of the case.
The most crucial development came when the sole witness against him, Annice Kennebrew, recanted her testimony. In 2017, she admitted that she had lied about seeing Forbes at the scene of the fire. Kennebrew revealed that she had been intimidated and threatened by two local men to falsely implicate Forbes. Following this admission, a judge overturned Forbes's conviction. In November 2020, after 37 years of wrongful imprisonment, Walter Forbes was released from prison, a free and exonerated man.
