On a Saturday evening in Detroit's vibrant Greektown, a dispute that began over a trivial matter of cutting in line at a liquor store escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of a beloved security guard. Darryll Straughter, a 48-year-old man, was on duty at Athens Liquor on Monroe Street on the evening of April 15, 2023, when the fatal encounter unfolded.
Known affectionately as 'Big D' to those who frequented the area, he was not just a security guard but the owner of DNL Security Solutions, a company that provided security for several local businesses.
Witnesses reported that an argument broke out between customers, and Straughter, in his capacity as a peacekeeper, stepped in to de-escalate the situation. It was then that a man allegedly involved in the dispute, later identified as 33-year-old Travis Deshawn Irving, produced a handgun and shot Straughter in the chest. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased. The incident was part of a notably violent weekend in the city, prompting calls for increased safety measures.
The aftermath of the shooting saw a swift response from the Detroit Police Department, who arrested Irving later that same day. Also taken into custody was his companion, 34-year-old Kay Christian, who was accused of attempting to conceal the weapon used in the shooting in her bra as they fled the scene. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged Irving with murder and Christian as an accessory to the crime.
In the days that followed, the Greektown community mourned the loss of a man described as a 'gentle giant' and a 'hero' who had dedicated himself to protecting the neighborhood.
