In the spring of 2013, an incident unfolded on the streets of Detroit that would ultimately claim the life of a dedicated police officer. On April 2nd of that year, officers were engaged in a high-speed pursuit of a murder suspect. The chase came to a dramatic end at the intersection of Linwood and Hooker Street, where the suspect's vehicle was cornered.
From inside the car, the murder suspect began shooting at the officers, wounding one of them.
The officers returned fire, and in the ensuing exchange, the suspect was killed. During the chaotic scene, Detroit Police Officer Patrick E. Hill, who was 37 years old, was struck in the head by what was believed to be shrapnel from a shotgun pellet fired by a fellow officer. Another individual who was in the vehicle with the suspect attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended.
Officer Hill was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. He fought for his life for six months, but his injuries proved to be insurmountable. He remained in a vegetative state and ultimately succumbed to the complications from his wounds on October 19, 2013. A 13-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department, he was survived by his wife and four children.
