Derrick Blanton, a 27-year-old male, was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in Detroit, Michigan, on the evening of May 5, 2016. The incident occurred near the intersection of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Glynn Court in the Boston-Edison neighborhood. Blanton was driving a conversion van with his 19-year-old girlfriend and their two young children, a one-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy, when occupants of a black Impala with silver trim opened fire on their vehicle.
After being struck by gunfire, Blanton lost control of the van, which then crashed into a pole.
Blanton was pronounced dead at the scene. His girlfriend sustained a gunshot wound to her finger and was treated at a nearby hospital and subsequently released. The two children were also hospitalized due to injuries they sustained from the impact of the crash. The one-year-old was reported to be in stable condition, while the six-year-old's condition was initially unknown.
Detroit Police investigators at the time believed the shooting was a targeted attack.
