In the spring of 2017, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal act of violence in a north Minneapolis strip mall parking lot, claiming the life of 26-year-old Iesha Lanell Wiley, a Black/African American female. On the afternoon of May 12th, Wiley was with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Marvel Williams, in a business near Lyndale and Broadway avenues.
The encounter turned violent when Williams punched Wiley in the face while she was holding an infant.
The confrontation spilled out into the parking lot. After putting the infant down safely, Wiley pursued Williams and used mace on him. As the argument continued, Williams reportedly told his friend, Nicholas Jefferson, who was waiting in a nearby car, to shoot her. From the driver's seat of the vehicle, Jefferson is said to have reached across to the passenger side and fired a single shot, striking Wiley. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Nicholas Jefferson was quickly apprehended and charged with second-degree murder. Marvel Williams, however, fled and remained a fugitive for two months. He was eventually located and arrested in north Minneapolis after a foot chase. Williams was subsequently charged with second-degree murder for his role in instigating the fatal shooting.
Nicholas Jefferson's case went to trial, where a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder. He was later sentenced to more than 35 years in prison for firing the shot that ended Iesha Wiley's life. Marvel Williams, the man who argued with and ordered the shooting of Wiley, pleaded guilty to aiding an offender.
