On July 11, 2020, Shanette Alexandria Marable, aged 31, was tragically killed in a shooting incident in North Minneapolis. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. near the intersection of 26th and Emerson Avenues North. Marable was a passenger in a car driven by a man who flagged down police officers after the shooting. The car also contained a 3-year-old child who was covered in blood from glass shards but was not shot. Officers found Marable unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head.
Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at North Memorial Medical Center the following day.
The investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between the driver of the car and the occupants of another vehicle. The suspect, Devon Manley, aged 29, was identified as the shooter. Manley had a history of violent altercations with the driver of the car Marable was in. On the night of the incident, Manley fired multiple shots into the vehicle, intending to hit the driver but instead striking Marable.
Devon Manley was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and premeditated attempted first-degree murder. He pleaded guilty to these charges and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Additionally, he received a concurrent sentence of 17 3/4 years for other related charges. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of violent disputes and the impact on innocent bystanders like Shanette Marable.
