On the last day of 2019, Monique Latrice Leanna Baugh, a 28-year-old Black/African American female and a real estate agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was lured to a fabricated house showing in the suburb of Maple Grove. This set in motion a tragic sequence of events that would end her life. The call for the showing was a ruse, orchestrated as part of a premeditated and violent plan. When she arrived at the location, Baugh was ambushed, abducted, and forced into the back of a U-Haul truck.
Her hands were bound with tape.
The kidnappers then drove the U-Haul to the Minneapolis home Baugh shared with her boyfriend, Jon Mitchell-Momoh, and their two young children. A masked gunman used Baugh's key to enter the residence and shot Mitchell-Momoh multiple times in front of their children. Miraculously, he survived the attack and was able to call for help. Roughly an hour later, police were alerted to gunshots in an alley in the Willard-Hay neighborhood of Minneapolis. There, they found Monique Baugh, shot three times. She was transported to a local medical center but succumbed to her injuries.
The subsequent investigation revealed the murder was rooted in a business dispute between Baugh's boyfriend, a rapper, and a former associate. Authorities identified and charged five individuals in connection with the intricate plot. Cedric Berry and Berry Davis were convicted of first-degree murder and kidnapping for carrying out the abduction and killing and were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Lyndon Wiggins, identified as the mastermind behind the scheme due to a falling out with Mitchell-Momoh, was also found guilty of aiding and abetting first-degree murder and kidnapping and received a life sentence.
Elsa Segura, a former probation officer and Wiggins' girlfriend, was convicted for her role in luring Baugh to the fake house showing. Her initial life sentence was later overturned, and she pleaded guilty to a lesser kidnapping charge, receiving a 20-year prison sentence. A fifth individual, Shante Davis, was charged with aiding an offender after the fact for her involvement.
