On December 13, 2025, authorities in Richfield, Minnesota, responded to a disturbing report at an apartment complex on the 7600 block of Knox Avenue South. A neighbor called 911 after witnessing a man dragging the unresponsive body of a bleeding woman from the building and placing her into a vehicle. Officers arriving at the scene discovered trails of blood in the common hallway leading to the apartment unit, where they found more blood on the carpet and walls near the entryway.
While police secured the scene, the vehicle was observed speeding and running a red light as it fled the area.
The driver, identified as Yusuf Ali Salat, arrived shortly thereafter at the emergency room of Fairview Southdale Hospital in nearby Edina. Medical staff rushed to the car and found 23-year-old female Sumaya Hassan Mohamed in the back seat. Despite immediate attention, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. Salat initially told investigators that she had shot herself, but the physical evidence and witness accounts immediately cast doubt on his version of events.
An autopsy performed by the medical examiner determined that the victim died from a single gunshot wound to the back of her left shoulder, with the bullet traveling through her liver. The death was ruled a homicide, as the nature of the wound was inconsistent with a self-inflicted injury. During a search of the apartment shared by the victim and the suspect, detectives recovered a Glock 9mm handgun that had been tossed into the snow outside the balcony, along with a magazine and a spent shell casing located nearby.
Inside the residence, law enforcement also found significant quantities of illegal narcotics, including several hundred grams of marijuana and over fifty grams of cocaine hidden behind furniture and in kitchen cabinets. Yusuf Ali Salat, age 25, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and first-degree drug possession. He was held in custody with bail set at $500,000 and faces up to forty years in prison for the murder charge and additional time for the drug offenses if convicted.
