In the city of Minneapolis on November 2, 2017, the life of 35-year-old Hispanic female Martina Lopez Garcia was tragically cut short in her own home. Officers were called to her apartment in the 2700 block of Cedar Avenue South around 3 p.m. after two acquaintances discovered the bodies of Garcia and a man later identified as Homero Lopez Salinas, also 35 years old.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Martina Lopez Garcia died from multiple gunshot wounds to
the head, and her death was ruled a homicide. Salinas's death was ruled a suicide from a single gunshot wound to the head. Investigators quickly concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide and that there were no other suspects.
Further investigation revealed that Garcia and Salinas had been in a previous romantic relationship. Although they were living at separate addresses at the time of their deaths, records show they had purchased a home together in March 2014. On that autumn day, Salinas went to Garcia's apartment where the fatal events unfolded. In the hours following the discovery, friends and relatives of Garcia gathered outside the apartment building, watching as detectives processed the scene of the tragedy.
