On a tragic day in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the life of 15-year-old Victoria Alvarez was cut short. The Hispanic/Latino female, a sophomore at South High School, was a beloved niece, cousin, and friend.
On September 25, 2015, in their South Minneapolis home, Victoria and her 48-year-old mother, Eugenia “Gina” Tallman, were fatally shot by Gonzalo Galvan, her mother's 50-year-old husband.
The couple’s 7-year-old son was present at the time of the killings but was not physically harmed. The motive for the tragic event was rooted in domestic turmoil, as Gina had recently told a family member of her intention to leave Galvan.
The events of that day unfolded as a result of a confrontation between Galvan and Tallman. According to law enforcement, Galvan confronted Gina after discovering backpacks filled with money, accusing her of planning to leave him and take their son away. In the ensuing violence, both Victoria and her mother were killed. An autopsy later confirmed that both had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Gonzalo Galvan was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder. During his trial, he admitted to shooting both victims but claimed the act was not premeditated. His defense sought a jury instruction for first-degree heat-of-passion manslaughter, but the court denied the request. Ultimately, a Hennepin County jury found Galvan guilty of the first-degree premeditated murders of both Victoria Alvarez and Eugenia Tallman. He was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes.
