On the evening of January 4, 2026, Jalen Coats Stevens, a 28-year-old man from Detroit, Michigan, was celebrating a recent work promotion with his brother, Glenn Stevens. The brothers were at a lounge on Grand River Avenue when an altercation that began inside the establishment spilled out onto the street. In the ensuing chaos, Jalen was fatally shot, and his brother Glenn was stabbed multiple times. Medics arrived at the scene and pronounced Jalen Coats Stevens dead.
His brother was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but ultimately survived the attack after enduring numerous stab wounds. Jalen was a father of four.
The investigation into the violent encounter led Detroit police to take 42-year-old Michael Alan Harris of Detroit into custody. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged Harris with First-Degree Murder, Felony Firearm, and Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer. Harris was arraigned in 36th District Court and remanded to jail, with a probable cause conference and a preliminary examination scheduled for later in January 2026.
While an arrest was made in connection with the shooting death of Jalen, the investigation remained ongoing as police sought information on at least one other suspect, particularly the individual responsible for stabbing Glenn Stevens. The family, devastated by the loss, held a vigil and urged any witnesses to come forward, believing that more people were involved in the altercation that led to the tragedy.
