On a summer evening in Pontiac, Michigan, a dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 20-year-old Giovanni Smith. The events of August 21, 2019, unfolded after an initial physical altercation, leading to a fatal shooting that also left two other men, Benjamen Baso and Tyler Davis, wounded. Smith, a college student, was remembered as a kind, loving, and free-spirited individual who was loved by everyone who knew him.
The man responsible for the shooting was identified as
Gregory Carlos Boswell. Following the initial fight, Boswell went into his residence, only to reemerge moments later armed with a gun. He then fired multiple shots, fatally wounding Smith with a gunshot to the face. Witnesses at the scene later testified that no one else was armed, nor was anyone charging at Boswell when he opened fire.
During his trial, Gregory Carlos Boswell claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that he believed he was in imminent danger after seeing what he perceived as threatening gestures. However, the jury rejected his claim. He was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder for the death of Giovanni Smith. In addition to the murder conviction, Boswell was also found guilty on two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder for the injuries sustained by Benjamen Baso and Tyler Davis, along with three counts of felony-firearm. He received lengthy, concurrent sentences for the violent offenses, in addition to consecutive two-year terms for the firearm convictions.
