In the late summer evening of August 26, 2020, tragedy struck in Pontiac, Michigan, forever altering the lives of several families. Montray Jamar 'Money' Morris, a 29-year-old Black man, was fatally shot in a violent outburst at the Carriage Circle Apartments. The incident, which claimed two other lives and left a fourth man seriously injured, was the culmination of a long-simmering dispute.
The violence erupted just after 9 p.m., shattering the evening's calm. When law enforcement arrived at the apartment complex on Auburn Avenue, they discovered a grim scene with four men shot. One man was found on a front porch, another inside an apartment, and two others on the front lawn. Montray Morris, along with Dominque Latrell Williams, 28, and Kenrick Keon Lanehart, 39, succumbed to their injuries. A 25-year-old man was also critically wounded but survived the attack.
The investigation quickly pointed to a suspect, 32-year-old Kenneth Durell Clay, a resident of the apartment complex. The shooting was reportedly the result of an ongoing conflict between Clay and the victims, with roots stretching back several years. On that fateful night, the four men were on the porch of Clay's home when he allegedly opened fire on them before fleeing the scene.
In a surprising turn, Kenneth Clay later turned himself in to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. The weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was also recovered. Clay was subsequently charged with a litany of felonies, including three counts of first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, and multiple firearm offenses. He was arraigned and denied bond as the legal proceedings against him commenced. The community was left to grapple with the senseless loss of three young men and the deep-seated conflict that led to the deadly confrontation.
