In the late summer evening of August 26, 2020, tragedy struck in Pontiac, Michigan, forever altering the lives of several families. Dominique Latrell Williams, a 28-year-old male, was caught in a burst of gunfire that erupted at the Spring Lake Village apartment complex. The violent encounter left Williams and two other men, 39-year-old Kenrick Keon Lanehart and 29-year-old Montray Jamarr Morris, dead. A fourth man was also critically injured in the shooting but survived.
The incident stemmed from what authorities described as an ongoing dispute between neighbors, a conflict that had reportedly simmered since a previous altercation in 2014.
The events of that fateful night unfolded when the four victims were on the front porch of the shooter's residence. The man, later identified as 32-year-old Kenneth Durell Clay, emerged from his home armed with a handgun and opened fire on the group before fleeing the scene. In a surprising turn of events, Clay later turned himself in to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Pontiac Substation. He was taken into custody without incident, and the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered from another location.
Following his surrender, Kenneth Durell Clay was charged with a litany of felonies, including three counts of first-degree premeditated murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, and multiple firearm offenses. He was arraigned on August 28, 2020, and was denied bond. The case proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a jury trial. On April 20, 2022, Clay was convicted on all counts. For the deaths of Dominique Latrell Williams, Kenrick Keon Lanehart, and Montray Jamarr Morris, he received multiple life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole. He was also sentenced to a significant prison term for the assault on the fourth victim and for the firearms charges, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the deadly shooting.
