On a cold February evening in Pontiac, Michigan, the life of Troy Duane Jones, a 49-year-old man known affectionately to his family and friends as 'Punch,' was brought to a tragic and violent end. On February 19, 2022, Jones was discovered in the driver's seat of his car, which had crashed into a fence and a snowbank in the parking lot of a local party store on Franklin Road. The vehicle's engine was still running, his foot still on the accelerator.
It was soon clear that this was no ordinary car accident; Jones had been shot.
Inside the car with him was his girlfriend, who had also been struck by a bullet, sustaining a wound to her hand. The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to an acquaintance of Jones, Julius Darnell Standifer Sr. The day following the discovery of Jones's body, an Oakland County Sheriff's deputy on a routine patrol located and arrested Standifer in connection with the fatal shooting.
The subsequent legal proceedings revealed a man with a prior criminal history. Standifer, who was 52 at the time of his arrest, was initially charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, and two counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His past convictions included assaulting a police officer, drug-related offenses, and driving under the influence.
Ultimately, Julius Darnell Standifer Sr. entered into a plea deal with prosecutors. The charge of first-degree murder was dismissed, and in its place, a charge of second-degree homicide was added. In February 2024, Standifer was sentenced to a term of 23 to 60 years in prison for the second-degree murder of Troy Duane Jones. He also received concurrent sentences for the charges of assault with intent to murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
