On a summer evening in Pontiac, Michigan, tragedy struck, forever altering the lives of several families. On July 8, 2025, 18-year-old Omarrel Sahon Ford Jr. was fatally shot in a vacant field near the intersection of West South Boulevard and Highland Avenue. First responders found him unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite life-saving efforts and being rushed to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
During the incident, a second individual, a 19-year-old man, was also shot and subsequently hospitalized. He was expected to survive his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, with law enforcement quickly focusing on a group of teenagers believed to be involved. In the days that followed, four teens, with ages ranging from 13 to 17, were taken into custody. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office reported that the individuals involved knew each other, suggesting a dispute that escalated to gunfire. While the younger teens were later expected to be released pending further investigation, the focus of the case turned to a 17-year-old suspect.
The 17-year-old was charged as an adult with second-degree murder for the death of Omarrel Sahon Ford Jr. The charges against him also included two counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of felony firearm, and one count of carrying a concealed weapon. He was designated to be tried in family court, with a preliminary examination scheduled for late July 2025. In the wake of the violence, Omarrel's grandmother and guardian, Barbara Watson, expressed her profound grief and frustration with the ongoing youth violence, describing her grandson as a loving and caring young man.
