In the early hours of July 3, 2017, the life of 23-year-old Marcus Allen Burkett was tragically cut short in his hometown of Pontiac, Michigan. A talented and well-loved tattoo artist known affectionately as 'Merk,' he was a student eagerly anticipating the fall semester at Oakland Community College. His aspirations and the love he shared with his family, including his daughter Taylor, were extinguished in a violent encounter that shook the community.
The incident unfolded around 4 a.m.
in the 50 block of Thorpe Street, where a gathering was taking place. What began as a social event quickly turned into a scene of chaos and bloodshed when an attempted armed robbery escalated into a quadruple shooting. In the hail of bullets, Marcus was fatally wounded. Three other individuals, a 17-year-old female, a 17-year-old male, and a 19-year-old male, also sustained injuries but ultimately survived the horrific event. The violence of that morning left a permanent void in the lives of those who knew and cherished Marcus.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office launched an intensive investigation. Their efforts quickly led to the identification and arrest of a suspect, 19-year-old William Nelson, who was himself injured during the incident. Nelson was subsequently charged with a string of serious offenses, including open murder for the death of Marcus Burkett, two counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and assault with intent to murder for the injuries sustained by the other three victims. He was arraigned and held without bond, facing the grave consequences of the night's tragic events.
