In the quiet city of Pontiac, Michigan, a trivial act of disrespect spiraled into a fatal encounter for Cornelius James Jones, a 33-year-old man. On the evening of February 21, 2024, Jones was in his apartment on Carriage Circle Drive with acquaintances when an argument erupted. The dispute began after a guest, 22-year-old Sadarie Deshawn Donalson, spit in Jones' kitchen sink. Jones expressed his displeasure, calling the act disrespectful, and asked Donalson to leave his home. This seemingly minor confrontation quickly escalated into a tragedy that would claim Jones's life.
After being told to leave, Donalson and another man, 22-year-old Dewaun Demarco Benion, initially departed from the apartment. However, they soon reentered, and a physical altercation began between Benion and Jones. Once the fight concluded, Donalson fatally shot Jones. Witnesses inside the apartment heard the argument and the subsequent gunshots. When deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m., they discovered Jones on the floor of his apartment, unconscious but still breathing. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Both Donalson and Benion fled the apartment after the shooting, prompting a police search. Benion was apprehended almost immediately, while Donalson was captured after a brief foot chase. The firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was later recovered. Sadarie Deshawn Donalson was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed weapon, and resisting and obstructing a police officer. An Oakland County jury found him guilty of all charges. His accomplice, Dewaun Demarco Benion, pleaded no contest to a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm. Benion was sentenced to one year in jail.
