On the evening of May 6, 2022, a violent encounter at a Detroit gas station tragically cut short the life of 47-year-old Arthur Gowens, a Black male resident of the city. The incident unfolded at approximately 5:45 p.m. in the 8820 block of Wyoming Avenue when Gowens was confronted by an assailant in what began as a robbery. During the commission of the crime, the situation escalated dramatically, and the suspect discharged a firearm, striking Gowens in the chest.
Emergency services were
promptly dispatched to the scene, and medics transported Gowens to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival. The Detroit Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the senseless act of violence that had claimed a man's life over a demand for his belongings. Their investigative work quickly led them to a person of interest.
Later that same day, police arrested 19-year-old Marquise Javier Walker in connection with the fatal shooting. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently brought a series of grave charges against the young suspect. These charges included one count of premeditated first-degree murder, one count of felony murder, one count of armed robbery, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, and three counts of felony firearm, reflecting the severity of the alleged offenses.
Following the charges, Walker was arraigned in the 36th District Court, where he was ordered to be held in jail without bond. The court scheduled a probable cause conference for May 24, 2022, and a preliminary examination for May 31, 2022. These proceedings were set to determine if there was sufficient evidence to move forward with a full trial for the robbery that ended in the untimely and violent death of Arthur Gowens.
