In the biting cold of a February night in Detroit, the life of Roderick 'BJ' Jones, a 33-year-old male, was tragically cut short. Jones, a man who had dedicated his life to service, first as an Army Ranger veteran and then as a Highland Park Reserve Officer, was working a security detail at the Opyum Lounge Nightclub on 8 Mile and Telegraph. It was in the early hours of a Saturday morning in 2015 when violence erupted, leaving a community to mourn a dedicated father and public servant.
That evening, Jones was managing his duties at the nightclub, a role he undertook through his own security firm. At some point during the night, an altercation led to him ejecting two men from the premises. Later, when one of the men, identified as Walter Jennings, attempted to re-enter the club, Jones stood his ground and refused him entry. This refusal allegedly prompted Jennings to open fire, striking Jones multiple times in the chest in what was described as an ambush in the nightclub's parking lot. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but the wounds proved fatal.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Detroit Police Department launched a swift investigation. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of a suspect. Within days, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced that 35-year-old Walter Jennings of Detroit had been arrested and charged in connection with the murder of Roderick Jones. The charges brought against Jennings, a man with a prior criminal record, included first-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and a felony firearm charge.
