Senghore Ball, a 16-year-old boy from Detroit, Michigan, died after a single gunshot turned a routine moment on the city’s west side into a sudden catastrophe on May 29, 2014. The fatal shot came from inside DJ’s R US, a neighborhood music store near the area of Fenkell and Meyers, where tension flared in an instant and the consequences landed on someone who wasn’t the intended target.
Police said the store owner believed he was about to be robbed after noticing a man inside the shop making gestures and movements that felt threatening. In that split second, the owner drew a handgun and fired one round. Instead of stopping the person he feared, the bullet went through the store’s front window and struck Senghore in the head outside. A passing driver later described hearing the bang and seeing a man collapse on the sidewalk, the scene so abrupt it left witnesses grasping for an explanation that still didn’t fully come.
In the immediate aftermath, the story itself seemed to shift as investigators worked to pin down what had really happened.
