In the heightened security atmosphere following the September 11th terrorist attacks, Federal Protective Service Officer Ronald Sheffield, a 36-year-old White/Caucasian male and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was on duty at the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit, Michigan. On September 21, 2001, a mere ten days after the attacks, a call came in about a man with a gun at the building's metal detectors, a place where security had been significantly increased.
