On a late Wednesday afternoon, the life of 16-year-old Elijah Reese was tragically cut short on the east side of Detroit. The high school sophomore, a Black male, was walking home from East English Village Preparatory Academy with a friend on May 22, 2024, when they were approached by three other young men dressed in black. The encounter, which took place near Bedford Street and the Edsel Ford Service Drive, quickly escalated into a fatal altercation.
According to police, the incident
was an attempted robbery that went horribly wrong. Reese was shot multiple times in the chest and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His family believes the motive for the senseless act of violence was a pair of Alexander McQueen sneakers valued at $1,200 that Reese had purchased with his own money from a job. The assailants fled after the shooting, leaving a community to grapple with the loss of a young life over a pair of shoes.
The Detroit Police Department launched an investigation, and on June 6, 2024, two teenage suspects were arrested in connection with the murder. The suspects were identified as 15-year-old Barry Love and 16-year-old Anthony Carter, both from Detroit. They were charged as adults with felony murder, armed robbery, and two counts of felony firearm.
In February 2025, Love and Carter were sentenced for their roles in Elijah Reese's death. Their sentences included two years at the Michigan Department of Corrections, to be followed by a prison term of 20 to 40 years. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice to Reese's grieving family and community, though the profound loss of a promising young man continues to be felt.
