Lester Owens III, a 24-year-old man, was fatally shot in Detroit, Michigan on April 19, 2026, following a series of events that began at an illegal drag racing meetup. The night took a tragic turn after police broke up the event, leading to a car collision involving the vehicle carrying Owens and two siblings, 24-year-old Jasmine Sheeler and 25-year-old Trevor Sheeler Jr.
Following the crash, the occupants of the Sheeler's vehicle, including Owens, pursued the other car to a gas station
on West McNichols Road. There, at approximately 2:59 a.m., Owens and the Sheelers exited their vehicle and approached the other car. They opened the driver's side door and a physical altercation began with the driver. During the confrontation, a 22-year-old male passenger in the back seat of the approached vehicle fired a weapon.
Lester Owens III was struck by gunfire in the head. Jasmine Sheeler suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. Owens and Trevor Sheeler Jr., who was also shot in the head, were transported to a local hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries.
The 22-year-old shooter, who held a license to carry a concealed pistol, remained at the scene and was arrested without incident. Detroit police submitted a warrant request for charges against him. However, after a review of the evidence, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office declined to file charges. The decision was based on a determination that there was insufficient evidence to disprove the shooter's claim of acting in lawful self-defense and defense of others, as permitted under Michigan law. Authorities stated that at least one of the individuals who approached the car was armed, and multiple guns were recovered from the scene. The suspect was subsequently released from custody.
