In the early morning hours of March 31, 2022, a family dispute in a Detroit, Michigan, home culminated in the tragic death of 23-year-old Dazion Zachary. The young Black / African American man was found by police in the basement of a residence on Sussex Street, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to his chest. Emergency medical responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
The subsequent investigation into the shooting revealed a heartbreaking scenario.
It is alleged that Dazion's older brother, 32-year-old Christopher Johnson, fired a handgun through a closed door within the house, striking and killing his younger sibling. While the specific motive for the altercation has not been publicly detailed, authorities have described the incident as a tragic family altercation.
Following the incident, Christopher Johnson was taken into custody and faced a series of serious charges. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged him with second-degree murder, discharge in or at a building causing death, felon in possession of a firearm, and felony firearm. Johnson was arraigned on April 4, 2022, and was remanded to jail. His probable cause conference was scheduled for later that month.
