A freshman at Western Michigan University and a member of the cheerleading squad, he was home for the holiday break. On the night of December 22nd, Damond was sitting in a car with two friends at the Eastland Court Apartments, in the area of Cadieux and Morang on the city's east side.

shattered by gunfire. A vehicle, later identified by witnesses as a Chrysler 300, drove by and unleashed a spray of bullets at the car Damond and his friends were in. In the chaotic moments that followed, it became devastatingly clear that Damond had been fatally wounded. The two friends who were with him in the vehicle sustained injuries but survived the violent attack.
In the wake of the shooting, investigators expressed their belief that Damond was not the intended target of the assailants.
