In the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 18, 2017, the life of 59-year-old Jawwaad Akbar was tragically cut short in his home on Detroit's northwest side. The Detroit Fire Department was summoned to extinguish a blaze at a residence on the 22400 block of Santa Maria Street, between Grand River and McNichols. After the flames were put out, at approximately 8:45 a.m., first responders made a grim discovery inside the home.
The body of Jawwaad Akbar was found within the charred remains
of the house. An initial investigation soon revealed that the fire was not the cause of his death. It was determined that Mr. Akbar, a father of three, had been shot multiple times before the fire was intentionally set. His body was discovered burned at the scene. According to his family, a friend had been visiting Mr. Akbar and left his home around midnight, leaving him as the only person in the residence at that time.
The case is being investigated as a homicide. As of now, the perpetrators of this crime remain at large, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Jawwaad Akbar. Law enforcement officials and family members have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible. Crime Stoppers of Michigan has offered a cash reward of up to $2,500 for any information that leads to an arrest in this case. The investigation into his death remains ongoing.
