On June 27, 2025, a drive-by shooting shattered the peace of the park, also claiming the life of 4-year-old Samir Josiah Grubbs and injuring a 17-year-old. The incident unfolded around 6:20 p.m. near Denby High School, a place intended to be a safe haven for children and families.
Daviyon's father later shared that he was told his son acted heroically, jumping in front of a bullet to save another child.
The shooting, which left the community in shock and mourning, was allegedly the result of a trivial dispute. Authorities believe the tragic event stemmed from an earlier altercation on a bus where someone snatched a ski mask from one of the suspects. This seemingly minor incident escalated with devastating consequences. The suspects are said to have driven to the park and opened fire on a group of people they believed were involved in the earlier dispute. Neither Daviyon Shelmonson-Bey nor the other young victims were involved in the initial altercation.
The Detroit Police Department launched an extensive investigation which quickly led to the identification and arrest of two suspects on July 2, 2025. Eighteen-year-old Brandon Lee Ware and nineteen-year-old William McKinley Wheeler were taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office brought serious charges against both men, underscoring the gravity of their alleged actions.
Ware and Wheeler each face a litany of charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, two counts of discharge from a vehicle causing death, one count of discharge from a vehicle causing serious injury, and five counts of felony firearm. Following their arraignment, both men were remanded to the Wayne County Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings. The swift arrests and subsequent charges brought a small measure of solace to a community grieving the loss of two young lives cut short by a senseless act of violence.
