As the altercation intensified, one of the men involved in the initial dispute drew a firearm. In response, the other man drew his own weapon and fired. The single bullet fired struck not only the man who had drawn his weapon, 25-year-old Jalen Welch, but also fatally wounded Palmer who was attempting to intervene. Detroit Police, who were already in the vicinity managing traffic for the game, responded quickly to the sound of gunshots and took the shooter into custody at the scene, recovering two weapons.
