On a tragic New Year's Eve in Sumter, South Carolina, 46-year-old Channing Goodman, a Black man, lost his life in a selfless act of peacemaking. The incident, which occurred on December 31, 2022, unfolded at a residence on Hampton Avenue where Goodman was attempting to de-escalate a physical altercation between two women. His intervention, however, had fatal consequences.
As Goodman stepped in to mediate the dispute, he was shot.
First responders found him with a gunshot wound in the front yard of the home. He was rushed to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital, but tragically, his life could not be saved. The Sumter Police Department quickly identified a suspect in the shooting, Amani Jalik Zahquad Kennedy, a 23-year-old from Fayetteville, North Carolina.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Kennedy fled the scene, prompting a search by law enforcement. An arrest warrant for murder was issued for him. A few days later, in early January 2023, Kennedy surrendered to the authorities and was taken into custody. He was subsequently booked at the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.
The investigation into Channing Goodman's death revealed that his heroic efforts to quell a volatile situation ultimately cost him his life. The Sumter Police Department, in its 2022 annual report, noted that Kennedy had been charged with murder in connection with the incident.
