In the early morning hours of Sunday, March 16, 2014, a dispute outside a nightclub in Sumter, South Carolina, ended in the tragic death of 33-year-old Tyrus Archie. Deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to Club Miami on Broad Street Extension shortly before 3 a.m. following reports of a fight. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Archie in the parking lot, having sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite the efforts of first responders, the Sumter County Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to a suspect. Witnesses at the nightclub described the alleged shooter to deputies and indicated that he had fled into a nearby field. A foot chase ensued, and law enforcement officers were able to apprehend 31-year-old Rodney Rodriuguz Green of Rembert. Another man, 26-year-old Rayquann Mondell Jenkins, was also found in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to his leg and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
Following his capture, Rodney Rodriuguz Green was arrested and charged with the murder of Tyrus Archie. He was also charged with attempted murder for the shooting of Mr. Jenkins. Green was subsequently held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center. In November 2015, a Sumter County jury found Rodney Rodriuguz Green guilty of the murder of Tyrus Archie and the attempted murder of the second victim. He was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes. The persistent issues at the nightclub ultimately led the Sumter County Sheriff to successfully work towards its closure.
