In the early morning hours of August 6, 2022, the life of 17-year-old Gavino Torres, a Hispanic male from New Boston, Michigan, was tragically cut short. Just after 3:00 a.m., police responded to a call of a shooting on Wahrman Road in Huron Township. Upon arrival, they discovered Gavino with gunshot wounds to his arm and abdomen. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Gavino's death quickly pointed to a suspect. Later that same day, 20-year-old Jaylin Julius Colon of Flat Rock turned himself in to the Huron Township Police Department. It is alleged that Colon produced and fired a handgun, fatally wounding Gavino, before fleeing the location. The shooting was described by police as a targeted incident, assuring the public that there was no further threat.
Following his surrender, Jaylin Julius Colon was charged with second-degree murder, carrying a concealed weapon, and felony firearm. He was arraigned in 34th District Court and given a $100,000 cash/surety bond. A probable cause conference was scheduled for August 17, 2022. The community was left to mourn the untimely loss of a young man, remembered by family and friends as a beloved son, grandson, brother, and nephew.
