In the summer of 2015, on the evening of July 5th, the life of 25-year-old Kelcay Anthony Humphrey was cut short in Brookhaven, Mississippi. He was walking at the Cloverdale apartment complex on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when an assailant approached him from behind and fired multiple shots into his back. Despite being rushed to a local medical center, Humphrey succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Humphrey's death revealed a troubled past.
In 2008, he had been convicted of manslaughter for the shooting death of another man in the very same apartment complex. After serving a portion of his 15-year sentence, he had been released just a few months before he himself was killed. This led investigators to initially consider a possible connection between the two events, though they later stated there was no evidence to support this theory.
Two days after Humphrey's death, police arrested 40-year-old Claudis D. Montgomery and charged him with murder. At the time, the police chief indicated they had enough evidence to press charges but did not publicly disclose a motive. The case took another turn when, in December of that year, a grand jury declined to indict Montgomery, and he was subsequently released from jail.
