In the autumn of 2015, a violent encounter in Brookhaven, Mississippi, led to the tragic death of 26-year-old Aquarius Nelson. On November 2nd, Nelson was fatally shot at a residence on Walnut Street. The man responsible for the shooting, Cordarryl Bell, claimed he acted in self-defense, asserting that Nelson and another individual were there to harm him in retaliation for a prior altercation.
Following the incident, Nelson was transported to King's Daughters Medical Center, where he was
pronounced dead. An investigation into the shooting ensued, leading to the arrest of Cordarryl Bell. Bell was subsequently indicted on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault. The legal process that followed was complex, involving two separate trials. The initial trial concluded with a hung jury, unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
A second trial was held, during which the prosecution presented forensic evidence suggesting that Nelson was shot in the back as he was attempting to flee, which contradicted Bell's claim of self-defense. No weapon was found on Nelson or in the vehicle that brought him to the location. After three hours of deliberation, the jury in the second trial found Cordarryl Bell guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter, as well as aggravated assault.
Ultimately, Cordarryl Bell was sentenced to serve 30 years in prison for his role in the death of Aquarius Nelson. The sentence consisted of 20 years for the manslaughter conviction and an additional 10 years for the aggravated assault charge, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision. Bell's subsequent appeals of his conviction were denied by both the Mississippi Court of Appeals and the Mississippi Supreme Court, solidifying the legal conclusion to the case.
