In the summer of 2022, a young man's life was cut tragically short in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Jerrivonte Harris, a 20-year-old male, was found unresponsive on the evening of July 12th. Police were dispatched to a residence at 414 Old Wesson Road around 9:26 p.m., where they discovered Harris on the floor. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lincoln County Coroner's Office.
The sudden and violent nature of his death sent ripples of grief and concern through the local community.
In the days and weeks that followed, the Brookhaven Police Department diligently pursued their investigation into Harris's death. Police Chief Kenneth Collins made public appeals for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward and provide a formal statement. The investigation was hampered by a 'wall of lies and a code of silence,' as potential witnesses were either unwilling or afraid to speak with law enforcement. Despite these challenges, investigators remained persistent in their efforts to bring justice for Harris, affectionately known as 'Spud.' His family, including his uncle, Pastor Jerry Kelly Jr., also pleaded with the community to share any information that could lead to an arrest, expressing their deep pain and desire for closure.
A breakthrough in the case came on August 23, 2022, when Brookhaven Police arrested 17-year-old Zetaveion Donlarions Porter. Porter was taken into custody at the same Old Wesson Road address where Harris's body had been found. He was subsequently charged as an adult with murder in connection with the shooting. The arrest was the result of what Chief Collins described as the 'diligence and hard work around the clock' of his investigative team. While the arrest brought a sense of progress for the grieving family, the motive behind the killing remained unclear, leaving them and the community with lingering questions.
