In the early morning hours of May 7, 2018, the life of 54-year-old Dwight Wesley, a Caucasian male from Bennington, Indiana, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter on a downtown street in Warsaw, Kentucky. Wesley, known by friends and family for his kind and helpful nature, had stopped to assist a stranger, 35-year-old Treigh Monroe of Louisville, who was experiencing car trouble.
This act of kindness took a fatal turn, leading to a murder-suicide that ended both men's lives.
What began as a roadside assistance stop escalated into a hostage situation. At some point after Wesley offered Monroe a ride, a disagreement arose, and Monroe armed himself with Wesley's own legally carried handgun. The situation spilled out onto East Main Street near the First Street intersection, where Monroe held Wesley at gunpoint. The Gallatin County Sheriff, Josh Neale, was the first to arrive at the scene and immediately attempted to de-escalate the volatile confrontation. He engaged in negotiations with Monroe, trying to convince him to release Wesley and surrender the weapon.
Despite the sheriff's efforts, the negotiations broke down. In a sudden and tragic turn of events, Monroe shot Wesley before turning the gun on himself. Emergency services were quick to respond, and Wesley was rushed to Carroll County Memorial Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Monroe was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation, conducted by the Kentucky State Police, confirmed the incident was a murder-suicide. It was determined that Wesley and Monroe did not know each other prior to the fatal encounter, with investigators believing Wesley was the victim of a carjacking that went horribly wrong. No other suspects were sought in connection with the deaths. The community was left to mourn the loss of a man described as a protector and a devoted family man, who lost his life while trying to help someone in need.
