In the early hours of a Friday morning in Brookhaven, Mississippi, a violent altercation shattered the peace of a family home, leaving a father and one of his children dead. On March 13, 2015, 31-year-old Jermaine Sims and his family were attacked in their residence, an event that would end in tragedy and profound loss. The quiet of the night was broken around 12:20 a.m.
by the sound of gunshots, the culmination of a dispute that had escalated with horrifying speed.
Living with the Sims family at the time was 32-year-old Jimmy Lyons. An argument, the specifics of which remain unclear, erupted between Lyons and Jermaine Sims. This disagreement led Lyons to arm himself with a gun, believed to have belonged to Sims, and open fire on the entire family. The brutal assault claimed the lives of Jermaine Sims and his 9-year-old daughter. Jermaine's wife, Victoria Sims, and their two other children, a 6-year-old boy and a 14-year-old daughter, were also shot and critically injured. In the immediate aftermath, the surviving family members, covered in blood, managed to flee their home and seek help from neighbors, who described the scene as something out of a horror movie.
When law enforcement arrived, they discovered a scene of immense suffering. Jermaine and his young daughter were found inside the house, one in the kitchen and the other in the hallway. Lyons was located in a bedroom and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and three counts of aggravated assault. According to the Brookhaven Police Chief at the time, Lyons confessed to the shootings, claiming he felt scared after the argument escalated. However, the evidence suggested a deliberate and remorseless act of violence. The community was left reeling from the senseless attack on the family.
