In the early morning hours of Sunday, January 28, 2024, a dispute in Brookhaven, Mississippi, escalated to fatal violence, claiming the life of 46-year-old Carlos Tarell Smith. The Brookhaven Police Department received a call around 12:03 a.m. reporting a fight in progress at 139 East Chippewa Street. A subsequent call quickly followed, indicating that someone was down.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Mr. Smith deceased at the scene, a victim of multiple gunshot wounds.
Another man, identified as Craig Dunbar, had also been shot during the altercation. Mr. Dunbar was transported by a private vehicle to Southwest Mississippi Medical Center in McComb for treatment of his injuries.
Carlos Tarell Smith, born on March 23, 1977, to Christine Smith and John Henry Smith Jr., was remembered by those who knew him as a kind and loving person. His death marked the first shooting fatality in Brookhaven for the year 2024, sending ripples of concern through the community.
In the wake of the shooting, Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins announced that investigators had identified a few suspects.
