Lamar "Ditney" Smith, a 63-year-old African-American civil rights activist, farmer, and World War I veteran, was tragically murdered on August 13, 1955, in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Smith was a prominent figure in the Regional Council of Negro Leadership (RCNL) and was actively involved in voter registration efforts for African-Americans.
