In the early evening of January 6, 2024, the life of 43-year-old Ledaron Keith Pope, a Black male, was tragically cut short in his Birmingham, Alabama, residence. Responding to a call of a person shot at approximately 5:05 p.m. in the 8400 block of 7th Avenue South in the South East Lake neighborhood, Birmingham Police Department officers discovered Pope unresponsive inside the home.
He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, and despite the efforts of Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel who were summoned to the scene, he was pronounced deceased.
The initial stages of the investigation pointed towards a possible home invasion that ended in a fatal shooting. Authorities began the painstaking process of piecing together the events that led to Pope's untimely death. As of May 2024, the case remained unsolved, with no arrests having been made in connection with the homicide. The lack of resolution has been a source of anguish for Pope's family, with his mother, Lisa Pope, expressing her sorrow and concern over the growing list of unsolved murders in the city.
The Birmingham Police Department has continued its appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the investigation. Crime Stoppers has also become involved, offering a cash reward of up to $5,000 for tips that could help identify and locate the person or persons responsible for Ledaron Pope's death. The case remains an open and active homicide investigation, a painful reminder of a life lost to violence.
