On Christmas Eve of 2015, a quiet street in Brookhaven, Mississippi, became the scene of a tragic event that claimed the life of 22-year-old Julian Gayten. The young man was discovered shot at his residence on North Jackson Street and was pronounced dead at 7:18 a.m. His death was the result of a violent encounter that also led to the death of 17-year-old Jaquarius Jones, who was found collapsed on nearby Flora Street.
Authorities quickly began to piece together the events of that
morning, and their investigation pointed to a planned robbery. Police reports indicated that a 17-year-old female, Marionne Shlik Keys, had been communicating with both Gayten and Jones. It is believed that Keys was with Gayten at his home while simultaneously texting Jones about a plan to rob him. This deadly setup culminated in a confrontation where Gayten and Jones apparently shot and killed each other.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement arrested Marionne Shlik Keys. She faced serious charges, including conspiracy to commit robbery and conspiracy after the fact to commit murder. Her bond was set at $50,000, and she was held in the Lincoln County jail. While police initially suggested the incident might be drug-related, they later retracted this, and Gayten's mother, Elmira Gayten Williams, vehemently denied any involvement of her son with drugs. She described him as a 'humble, good-hearted young man' who was active in his church and came from a loving family. Williams believes her son was targeted out of jealousy, citing a history of suspicious activity and attempted burglaries at their home.
The case has remained a source of pain and frustration for Gayten's family and the community. Law enforcement officials, including Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins and District Attorney Dee Bates, have expressed their belief that others were involved in the incident.
