In the early hours of February 6, 2017, a post-Super Bowl gathering at Club 66 in Yazoo City, Mississippi, turned deadly, leaving 35-year-old Gabriel Townsend and three other men dead. The violence erupted from a dispute involving a woman who was reportedly leaving the nightclub with Townsend. This act seemingly provoked the anger of another man, leading to a tragic sequence of events.
As Townsend sat in his car, preparing to give the woman a ride home, he was fatally shot.
The gunman then turned his weapon on others in the vicinity. Jerranden Allen, 32, was shot and killed when he came to Townsend's aid. The assailant continued his rampage, chasing down and killing Kevin Johnson. The fourth victim was the shooter's own uncle, 46-year-old Edward Johnson, whom he also shot and killed. Two of the victims died at the scene, while the other two succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital.
The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Bridell Barber. He fled the scene but was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Jackson, Mississippi, the following day. During his initial court appearance, Barber claimed his innocence. However, investigators reported that he had confessed to the killings during questioning. Witnesses alleged that Barber had declared there would be no witnesses after shooting Townsend.
In November 2021, Bridell Barber, then 32, pleaded guilty to four counts of capital murder for the nightclub shootings, as well as an additional 2016 murder charge for the killing of Justin Porter. By accepting the plea deal, Barber avoided a potential death sentence. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his crimes.
