On a Thursday morning in February 2018, the quiet of Patterson Road in rural Yazoo County, Mississippi, was shattered by a violent intrusion that ended in the death of 50-year-old Henry Glen Renfroe. The fatal encounter began around 9:25 a.m. when a silver car carrying two individuals stopped near Renfroe's residence. A Black male exited the vehicle and approached the house, claiming to have car trouble and asking for water.
This seemingly innocent request was a deceptive tactic.
After the initial suspect was given a container of water and asked for a larger one, a second, masked suspect armed with a rifle entered the home and demanded money. Inside the house with Renfroe were his son and three other people. A struggle for control of the rifle erupted between Renfroe's son and the masked intruder. As the two wrestled over the weapon, Henry Glen Renfroe ran to his son's aid and was fatally shot by the gunman.
Following the single, deadly gunshot, the two assailants fled the scene, escaping in the same silver car they had arrived in. The Yazoo County Sheriff's Department, with assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, launched a homicide investigation. All witnesses in the home were questioned and their accounts were found to be consistent. Despite the active investigation immediately following the murder, the suspects were not identified. As of early 2019, the murder of Henry Glen Renfroe was listed among the county's unsolved cases, with no arrests having been made and no suspects publicly named.
